Amity Rugby Fall Practices
Submitted by Edward Walsh on Fri, 09/17/2010 - 16:32Parents- would your son like to learn rugby, the newest* Olympic sport? Well Amity now has a fine program started and we are setting up our program for 2010-11.
Practices this fall and winter will lead to play next spring against other clubs around the state.
Amity along with our united team partner Madison finished 3-2 with some doubt that a bad call cost us one of those loses. We have returning veteran players who will help the club and younger players.
Learn more about the club at www.amityrugby.org or on facebook (Just search "Amity Rugby"). Call me at 203-397-0243.
We are ALWAYS looking for sponsors so please consider helping out!
*rugby was an Olympic sport until 1924 when the USA won the Gold.
Excitement at Center Field
Submitted by Aldon Hynes on Wed, 06/09/2010 - 05:10Woodbridge – As parents chatted and watched the Bethwood Softball League’s Woodbridge Purple Panthers on a fine summer’s evening at Center Field in Woodbridge. A small drama played out in the crowded parking lot. Joanna Cooper’s car was hit by a vehicle which then left the scene of the accident.
The offending vehicle did not have a license plate on the front, but a witness in the parking lot chased the vehicle down the driveway and managed to get the license plate information. The police were contacted and a helpful member of Woodbridge’s Police Department inspected the damage and spoke with Ms. Cooper and witnesses.

Fortunately, the damage was minor and there were no injuries. Other parents in the stands were willing to give the driver the benefit of the doubt. Perhaps they did not even realize they had scraped up against the Cooper’s vehicle.
Yet the important part of the story is not about the damage to the car, or perhaps even what might have been going on in the mind of the driver leaving the accident. The real story, a common story that does not get told often enough, is about people in a community caring about and looking after one another.
Back on the field, the players finished out their game without ever knowing what had happened in the parking lot. In the Bethwood Rookie League, they don’t keep score. Instead, they work on improving their game, having fun, and playing nicely together. It provides a good example to others about how games should be played and a nice parallel to community members coming together in the parking lot.

Panthers Versus Panthers
Submitted by Aldon Hynes on Sat, 05/15/2010 - 20:30In a rematch of their April 24th game, the Woodbridge Panthers took on the Orange Panthers at the Old Tavern Road Recreational Area Saturday morning. The Beth Wood Softball Rookie league focuses on the young players enjoying the game as they develop their skills and Saturday’s game was a perfect example of this.
Players, along with their parents and other fans enjoyed the warm spring sunshine interrupted only occasionally by chilly breezes. On the field, improvement in batting was easily discernable as many players connected nicely with the ball. Fielding was also notably improved with several exciting plays at third base and home plate.

To go along with the enjoyable development of skills by the players, the Woodbridge Citizen seeks to provide opportunities for students from town to develop their skills as budding sports reporters. So far, two students have started reporting on Woodbridge Sports. To protect the privacy of these young reporters, the Woodbridge Citizen has modified its policies. Adults are still required to use their full names when writing for the Woodbridge Citizen, but student reporters will use their first name and last initial. Hopefully, these student reporters will show similar joy and growth in their reporting that the Beth Wood Softball Rookies are showing in their playing. Unfortunately, for Saturday’s game, none of the student reporters were available.
The Woodbridge Panthers have games this coming Tuesday and Thursday at the Center Fields. The Woodbridge Lady Spartans will play Tuesday night in Orange against the Orange Panthers and the Woodbridge Wildcats will play in Orange on Thursday evening. Reporters, either student or adult, are sought to cover these and other Beth Wood Softball games.

Young Amity Rugby Players Take It To Staples of Westport
Submitted by Edward Walsh on Wed, 05/05/2010 - 10:13Sunday May 2, 2010- Wreckers Field Westport
The Amity-Madison united club took on Fairfield County/Metro NY powerhouse Staples and nearly walked away with 2 wins. The "A" side only included 1 Amity player, but even as underdogs the side almost took the match.
Were it not for the grinding down a veteran team can do to a younger side to take the advantage near the end of play - the final score would have been closer.
On the "B" side the young men of Amity were the majority scrummers and they delivered an outstanding level of play given their inexperience. When the final whistle sounded the ref gave the nearly tied match to Staples -- but only because a tri scored by an Amity player was disallowed, as he step out of bounds in the back of the shortened (football size) end zone.
Everyone on the field of play knows who actually won the match. Southigton is the likely next match for the club on May 16, but not confirmed.
Amity club has reached nearly 20 members as of 5-4-2010 and all high school age boys from the area can join. High schoolers at the local private schools who don't have a club can join the Amity side. More info at : www.amityrugby.org.

Kitty Fight

By Ben “Noodles” S.
On a hot May 1, 2010 the Purple Panthers played the Red Wildcats in softball.
In the top of the first there were two huge highlights. With one out, Wildcat number 4 hit a sky high bomb to shallow center for an easy single. There was a hard line drive to first base fielded by Panther number 10 for a batter and first baseman race.
In the bottom of the first, bases were loaded for Panther number 7. She drove in a run followed by one more and followed by a grand slam by Panther number 9.
In the top of the second, number 1 Wildcat hit a line drive to shallow right center that got by Panther second baseman number 5 for a base hit. Next came an easy dribbler right to third where the third baseman fielded it and made a force out play. With Wildcats on first and second, there was a rip to right field by number 12. Number 7 followed 12’s example with a base hit.

There was a hard grounder to third when the runner (Panther number 3) decided to go to second for the first double of the game. What an exciting start to the bottom of the second inning! This was followed by a single by number 5. With Purple Panthers on first and second, there was a base hit and all runners advanced. Next, there was a single, bringing number 5 to the plate. Things were getting tense! There was an RBI single by number 8 which left number 9 to clean things up.
At the top of the third, there was a hard hit to first base for a batter versus fielder race. Panther number 10, the first baseman, made the play for out number one. Boy oh boy, first base is a hot spot! One more hit to first, and the first play was repeated. There was a runner on third with a Wildcat up at bat, but she was quickly retired. Next up was number 12 who got an RBI single. Last, batter number 3 had bases loaded and didn’t fail the team. Grand slam!

At the bottom of the last inning, the Panthers got a three run homer to end the game after two base hits. The game ended when Panther number 8 trotted ‘round the bases.
After a long game of softball, the two teams shook hands and went home. It was a very exciting game in the Bethwood Softball league!
