Registrars of Voters are making plans to hold a registration drive at Amity, probably on Wednesday, April 7.

By law, the ROVs are required to hold such a drive in the high schools every year between January 1 and the end of the school year. At our regional high school, this effort is always organized by the Woodbridge ROVs in collaboration with their counterparts in Bethany and Orange.

In past ages, when the indefatigable Sue Duffy was part of the Critical Issues teaching team and Lucy Painter was only recently retired from the Social Studies department, it was easy to catch the attention of high school seniors at the tables in the hallway during the lunch waves. In the past few years, this arrangement has been much less fruitful.

So the plan this year is to send in teams of ROVs and assistants to the senior English classes. Students will be coached through the very quick process of filling out the forms. The registrars will coordinate, as they have always done, to get the forms to the correct Town Hall.

Besides remembering the date, students should plan to have driver's license or other photo ID with them, or at least remember the last 4 digits of their own Social Security number.

Seventeen-year-olds who will be 18 by the next voting day may also pre-register with the same forms as everyone else. If they choose (like others) to register with a political party that is holding a primary vote, AND they will be 18 by November 2, they may vote in primaries (yes, while they are still 17--it's in the CT Constitution).

Amity seniors can learn more on April 7. Others who need to register in Woodbridge can stop by Town Hall to see the Registrars on Wednesday morning (8:30AM-12noon) or see the Town Clerk any weekday 8:30AM-4:30PM. Would-be voters in Bethany and Orange should check with the Town Halls about where and how to register.
