- Background
In my "first career," I was a journalist, first an editor for two magazines in Boston ("The Writer" and "Plays"), (1981-1983) and then as a Producer, writer and reporter for WGBY-TV, the public TV station in Springfield MA, where I produced Public Affairs programming including documentaries on homelessness and Springfield's neighborhood, a weekly series on Massachusetts politics and government, and coverage of the national elections in 1988.
In my second career, I have gotten involved in politics, volunteering for Howard Dean's campaign and then volunteering and then working on Barack Obama's campaign.
My point of view regarding journalism is that for the public to trust a news source, advocacy and reporting must be kept separate. Journalists who have either a personal, financial, business or even moral stake in a topic or news story must either recuse themselves from reporting on it, or state up front that what they are writing is advocacy.
My two cents! Kudos to Aldon for starting this up.
